According to the Soil Association, the UK organic market continues to grow. The total market reached £3.2 billion last year, a 20% increase over the previous year and nearly double the market value back in 2011.
The recently released report suggests that increased consumer demand for healthier, more sustainable food options is driving demand for organics with shoppers willing to pay a premium for products seen as better for their well- being and the environment.
However, the report also reveals a significant challenge for the UK organic sector which is a heavy reliance on imported goods. This raises concerns about the carbon footprint associated with transporting organic products from overseas.
Additionally, UK organic farmland has remained flat at 3% for several years, failing to keep pace with rising consumer demand. This lack of domestic supply further contributes to the reliance on imports to meet market needs.
