Introduction to Agriculture Event

Shop Cotswolds member FarmEd is running a one-day event on Monday 6 July on an Introduction to Agriculture.

The session running from 10.00am to 4pm is aimed at people with little or no agricultural experience who are either entering a career in the rural sector or would like a basic knowledge of farming and food production

Topics covered will include:

  • The history of UK agriculture and how the landscape and food systems we see today have evolved.
  • The farming year and what happens in each season
  • The challenges facing farmers
  • A jargon-busting exploration of words like regenerative, farrowing, heifer, no-till and cover crops
  • Organisations, tech and jobs in agriculture.

Learning outcomes will include:

  • Understand why current farming methods are used in the UK
  • Gain knowledge of farm subsidies and environmental schemes
  • Differentiate between different farming methods
  • Increase confidence when talking with farmers and colleagues
  • Expand your farming vocabulary
  • Learn how to identify different types of grain, forage and fibre
