According to a new DEFRA commissioned review by the Organic Research Centre, organic farming delivers consistent environmental benefits across key indicators, including biodiversity, soil health and reduced chemical use.
The analysis, based on more than 300 peer-reviewed studies and farm-level data, found that organic systems show the strongest evidence of achieving Environmental Improvement Plan (EIP) goals.
To explore what the report means for the organic sector, ORC and the Soil Association will host a forthcoming webinar, Inside Defra’s EAP Review: Key Learnings for the Organic Sector. The webinar will consider how the review’s findings can inform discussion about the role of organic farming in the UK – from environmental policy and public goods delivery to sector communication, market development and future research priorities. It will be aimed at organic farmers, businesses, certifiers, researchers, policymakers and others interested in how organic systems are evidenced, understood and recognised within the food and farming system.
