This week the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee, in an evidence session to MPS, will examine how the country’s food supply chain operates, the market power of supermarkets and producers in the food supply chain as well as the relationship between food production costs and food retail prices.
The hearing will focus on the impact on consumers, how well they are served by the current structure of the food supply chain and how well the interests of shoppers and suppliers are presently balanced. MPs will examine what steps could be implemented to promote fairness and redress any existing imbalances.
There will also be an evaluation of mechanisms that could be put in place by the government to help consumers in the event of future shocks to the food supply chain.
